Offers & Enrollment Q&A
What is an "Application Window"?
California requires charter schools to set an application window to determine whether there are more applications for the upcoming year than there are seats available. (This window occurs in January) If there are more applications than seats available the charter school is required to conduct a public random drawing (lottery) for those seats.
The application window is used to determine if a lottery is required for any particular grade. The lottery will be used to fill available seats and to establish a waitlist, if necessary.
Applications continue to be accepted following the application window. Anyone applying after the application window would NOT participate in the lottery, but be placed on the waitlist for that grade if no seats are available, or receive an offer of admission if seats are available.
Admissions Timeline Overview
- Application Window Opens: Families submit applications during the publicly advertised enrollment period.
- Lottery (if needed): If applications exceed available spaces, a public random drawing is held. Those who are not offered a seat through the lottery will be placed on a waiting list.
- Offers & Enrollment: Applications will continue to be accepted after the lottery and scholars will be placed on a waiting list if a seat is not currently available. As seats become available, families on the waiting list will be offered a seat. All families offered a seat will have 72 hours to accept and complete registration.
- Mandatory Zoom Meeting (Group): Once enrollment paperwork is completed, a Zoom link will be provided for a group meeting that will give an overview of John Adams Academy's mission, vision and culture.
- Family Orientation: Following the mandatory Zoom meeting, campus staff will reach out to families to schedule a required one-on-one orientation with a school administrator. During this orientation, a start date will be provided.
- First Day of School: Enrolled scholars begin on the first day of the academic year or as scheduled if admitted mid-year.
If one of my scholars gets in, when will their siblings get in?
Siblings of admitted scholars receive priority on the waitlist. While we strive to accommodate families, sibling admission depends on seat availability.
Can I hold my offer until my other children receive theirs?
Holding an offer is not possible due to enrollment timelines. Families have 72 hours to accept their offer once received to secure their child's seat. Once you accept an offer for one child, their siblings receive priority on the waitlist.
Do I have to reapply if I decline an offer?
Yes, if you decline an offer, families have the ability to submit a new application immediately after declining and will be placed back on the waitlist.
Can I choose my own start date?
Start dates are set according to the academic calendar. Requests for alternative start dates are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Who can I contact about Campus Tours? All tours are managed at the campus. Please contact the campus directly for additional information or to reschedule.
Where can I get information about Immunizations?
As a public charter school, John Adams Academy follows all California immunization laws. All in-person scholars must be up to date on their immunizations. For more information, please visit the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
I selected AM TK or Kindergarten but was given PM (or vice versa). Can I change it?
Families are asked for AM/PM preferences, but placements are not guaranteed and are based on availability.
What other information should I know of?
For information pertaining to uniforms, school supplies, the first day of school, and other essential details, families will receive answers during their one-on-one orientation with a school administrator.
