Secondary (7th-12th) Schedule

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question: Why does my scholar’s schedule list a “0” period?

Answer: Upper grade scholars attend Periods 1 – 7 each day, Monday – Thursday. The “0” period listed on schedules correspond to advisory classes taught on Fridays (Friday A and Friday B on the Secondary Daily Schedule.) Dates of Friday A and Friday B schedules are designated on the Secondary Calendar.

Question: Why does my scholar’s schedule list two classes for the same period?

Answer: Printed schedules for John Adams Academy scholars include all classes assigned during the year. Classes can be assigned for an entire year, or for a semester only. The period for year-long classes will only be listed once while the period for semester-long courses will be listed twice on the schedule. Check the notation under the “Sem” column for further clarification: “F” for Fall, “S” for Spring and “Y” for year-long courses.

Question: Why does my scholar’s schedule list “Mentoring” as a Monday-Thursday class when mentoring is only taught on Friday?

Answer: The Monday-Thursday Mentoring class is an elective credit class (meaning the credit is applied as an elective credit rather than a core or A-G credit) where upper grade scholars learn to mentor younger scholars in language arts. Scholars receive mentoring instruction and then mentor younger scholars in handwriting spelling and reading during the class period.

Question: If I believe my scholar’s schedule has an error, what do I do to get it corrected?

Answer: Schedules for JAA scholars are carefully created with attention to graduation requirements and coordination of required courses and enrichment/elective course offerings. If you feel a course has been assigned in error please follow the process below.

To request a schedule review, parents and/or scholars can:

1. Complete the Online Schedule Review Request, or

2. Fill out a Schedule Review Request in the office during non-class times.

Scholars with scheduling concerns should attend the classes assigned on their schedule to minimize disruption while their request for review is being considered. All schedule concerns (7th - 12th grade) will be addressed within the first two weeks of school.
