About Miss Smith

Welcome Explorers!

I am so glad you are here; we are going to have a great fifth grade year. My name is Ms. Smith and I am very excited to be your teacher this year. I wanted to share with you a little bit about myself.

My name is Emily Smith.  This is my fifth year at JAA and I am so happy to be here.  I lived in the bay area for three years where I taught fourth grade, fifth grade and a 3/4 combination class.  Before that I taught music at Horizon Charter School, tutored, and taught private voice, flute and piano lessons.  I substitute taught grades TK-8 for several years as well and got to experience many different grades and schools.  I went to college at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA.  I studied elementary education and received my degree in Liberal Studies and a minor in Music. I continued there to earn my multiple subject teaching credential where I student taught in a third grade and fifth grade class.  I had so many amazing experiences and felt very prepared for my career.  I hope you have great experiences when you go to college too!

I am originally from Auburn, CA which is not too far from Roseville.  I was born and raised in the area.  It's nice to live where I came from and teaching at John Adams Academy.  My parents still live in the Auburn area.  I have one older brother who lives in Placerville.  My niece Lyle is 5 years old and my nephew is 3 years old.  They are my pride and joy and I love having Auntie time with them.

I love to go traveling with my family and friends.  This summer I went to Boston, Vermont, New York, Seattle, Oregon, Lake Tahoe, and the Bay Area.  Some spots I have traveled with my family are: Northern Idaho, Washington, Oregon, New York, Philadelphia, Colorado, Montana, Canada, Wyoming, Lake Tahoe, and Pismo Beach.  I have traveled with my choir in college all over Europe and four summers ago I traveled to Japan.  I love experiencing different cultures and learning about their history.  I have a great love for U.S. History and I am so excited that I will be teaching Social Studies for both my class and Mrs. Scale's class.  I attended a teacher history workshop this past summer called Freedoms Foundation.  Over 50 teachers from all over the country and myself traveled throughout the Northern Colonies: Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York to study the American Revolution and see where it all happened in battlefields and other locations too.  I can't wait to share all that I discovered there and also what I learned while I was in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Washington D.C. last summer in the American Revolution South workshop.  My goal is to go to every state in America and go see more countries: Ireland, England, Italy, France, Greece, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and the list goes on and on.

My hobbies include running, hiking, cooking, baking, going to see movies and live theater, reading, and just spending quality time with my family and friends.  I am part of a choir called Colla Voce where I sing soprano and I am also on the board of directors.  I absolutely love singing and find it important to make time to do the things you love.  I ran a half marathon a few years ago, a 9 mile race, many 5K races, and a 10K and 5K in the Revolution Run at JAA.  I look forward to running in future races.  It takes a lot of training and discipline, but I am up for the challenge.  My favorite book which happens to be a classic is Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.  This story truly inspired me to think creatively and to always dream big.  Anne also was an inspiration for me to become a teacher and just have a love for education.  This year I will be sharing and reading many wonderful books with you, and I hope that you discover lots of great books and share them with me.

If you ever have any questions, or need to talk about something please know you can always come and talk to me or write me a note.  I have been anxiously waiting for you to come, and I can't wait to learn more about you.  Here's to a wonderful school year!
