Have you ever noticed that high-pitched strings sit left of low-pitched strings? Why? Higher pitches tend to be better processed by the left hemisphere of the brain, while lower pitches tend to be better processed by a similar region in the right hemisphere. This organisation is thought to have repercussions far beyond music, perhaps even helping to explain why language is mostly processed in the left hemisphere.
Scientists have found that playing a musical instrument is the equivalent of a full-body work-out for the brain.
Researchers studied the brain development of 232 children between the ages of 6 to 18, who played a musical instrument. The more a child trained on an instrument, it accelerated cortical organization in attention skill, anxiety management and emotional control. Playing music altered the behavior-regulating areas of the brain.
