The first 30 days of school are more than a start—they’re a springboard. What scholars do now will echo through the entire year.
Here’s how to support your scholar to build habits that don’t just stick—they soar.
🔑 1. Begin with a Vision, Not Just a To-Do List
What is your family's vision for home education? What culture are you envisioning? Ask your scholar: “Who do you want to become this year?” Greatness starts with vision. Encourage your scholar to think beyond assignments and grades. Are they building leadership? Integrity? Courage? What Core Value(s) would they like to study, practice, and exhibit consistently? Write this vision down. Post it in their workspace. Revisit it often.
🕒 2. Master Your Scholar’s Schedule
Online learning requires self-leadership. The first month is the time to build solid routines. Below are a few ideas:
- Set consistent wake-up and learning times
- Create time blocks for focused work
- Schedule breaks for fresh air, movement, and reflection
- Use a planner or digital calendar (but actually use it!)
📚 3. Build the Reading Habit Early
Leadership starts with literacy. The scholars who read regularly think more critically, lead more boldly, speak more confidently, and write more eloquently.
Challenge: 20 minutes of additional independent reading a day. Classics preferred.
💬 4. Practice Daily Communication
Encourage scholars to:
- Message your mentor(s) using Canvas inbox with questions or simply to say hello
- Sign up for and attend Office Hours
- Participate in live sessions
- Reflect on what they’re learning in conversation with family
Great leaders know how to communicate early and often. Practicing Daily Communication begins with you! How do you model good school communication at home? This can be done by parent/guardian participation in:
- Routinely viewing Mentor Monday communication and short video message
- Learning through the Online Parent Canvas course
- Reading and referring to For Parent course pages and/or grade level newsletters
- Participating in in-person Field Trips or PSO-planned events to build community
- Attending or scheduling mentor office hours to ask questions
🚀 5. Reflect, Reset, Repeat Mistakes or setbacks?
They’re part of the process. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s progress. End each week with two questions: What went well? What can I improve next week?
Write it down. Learn from it. Move forward.
